Australian Geckos

The Geckos are back and better than ever!

Representing Australia as the Women’s National Deaf Basketball Team, the Geckos have a proud history dating back to 1982, when the first Australian Women’s Deaf team was formed. Their groundbreaking journey led to a historic medal win at the 15th Summer Deaflympics in Los Angeles in 1985.

Fast forward to today—the Geckos are soaring once again! After an incredible second-place finish at the Asia Pacific Deaf Basketball Championships, the team has officially qualified for the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan this November. This marks the end of a 15-year hiatus, and the Geckos are ready to bring their A-game to the world stage!

The Deaflympics is the pinnacle of sporting excellence for deaf athletes worldwide. It’s an international multi-sport event that has been held since 1924, making it one of the longest-running global sports events. The Deaflympics celebrates the talents and achievements of deaf athletes, providing them with a platform to compete at the highest level while fostering inclusivity and camaraderie on a global scale. For the Geckos, qualifying for the Deaflympics is more than just a sporting achievement—it’s an opportunity to inspire the deaf community and showcase the strength of Australian deaf basketball.

Deaf Basketball Australia (DBA) is the driving force behind developing and promoting basketball within the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in Australia. Through programs like the Geckos, DBA is committed to providing opportunities for deaf athletes to develop their skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and represent Australia on the world stage.

The Geckos program is not just about competing—it’s about fostering community, building confidence, and encouraging deaf and hard-of-hearing women to pursue their passion for basketball. It’s a chance to be part of something bigger, to represent Australia with pride, and to inspire the next generation of athletes.

Do you know a deaf or hard-of-hearing basketball player with big dreams? The Geckos are always on the lookout for passionate and talented players to join their ranks.
